Brentwood Bound - Building a Bright Future, stormwater management and community green space presented by Eric Gruenenfelder, Director of Parks and Recreation, City of Brentwood
The City of Brentwood has struggled with severe flooding over the past 100 years due to being on the receiving end of 37 square miles of watershed. The Brentwood Bound Plan is a comprehensive solution to overcome long time flooding and public safety challenges presented by the Deer Creek channel. The $79.6 million dollar plan will remove over 30 acres of land from the 100-year flood plain as well as add an additional 30 acres of greenspace for the residents of Brentwood. The City and design team have incorporated a number of sustainability initiatives to ensure the City's desire to create a livable, safe and healthy City promotes the responsible use and conservation of energy and natural resources.
Net Zero - Kept Simple, creating a net zero commercial headquarters in Brentwood presented by Todd Sweeney, Co-Founder, NAVIGATE Building Solutions
NAVIGATE Building Solutions, a leading commercial construction consulting firm, plans to build a net zero energy corporate headquarters in Brentwood, Missouri. The development is expected to be certified as the state’s first net zero commercial building by the International Living Future Institute by the end of 2022.
NAVIGATE’s future 8,360 square foot headquarters, known as Navigate Office Center, will combine superior energy efficiency with the generation of renewable energy from solar panels, ensuring the net consumed energy is less than the energy produced. In addition to reducing the environmental impact of energy consumption, project developers and founders of NAVIGATE Building Solutions, Todd Sweeney and Craig Schluter, aim to demonstrate the economic feasibility of net zero construction.
Creating Connections - Blending an Owner’s Core Philosophy and LEED Principles presented by Peter Steuterman, Contract/Construction Administrator, Hastings+Chivetta Architects
The Saint Louis University’s first pursuit of LEED certification for the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building, a transformative STEM teaching and research facility presented both successes and challenges. The three-story building features innovative teaching environments and flexible labs spaces, including: A three-story atrium. 10,000 SF of research space. New teaching lab spaces to support bioinformatics, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, neuroscience and computer science courses that support all science, engineering, nursing and health science majors at SLU. An active learning classroom that can seat up to 210. Formal and informal collaboration and gathering spaces and a research computing and data visualization support center.
Mass Timber meets WELL Design, City Foundry STL Phase 2 development presented by Tim Robottom, Principal & Chief Operating Officer and Lisa Morrison, Associate Principal, Lawrence Group
Vande East Offices are part of the Phase 2 development at City Foundry STL. New + Found Development in affiliation with Lawrence Group will develop and design a five-story mixed-use building totaling 86,000 SF. The project will be the first modern mass timber building erected in St Louis and will seek WELL certification. Several of the buildings were listed for demolition over the years, but plans fell through and the site was vacant for nearly a decade. Located in St. Louis’ vibrant, growing Cortex innovation district, the former Century Foundry complex is a 15-acre urban industrial site. Site features include a butterfly monitor pond truss roof structure, soaring factory spaces and massive divided-lite windows. Preserving this piece of history was a big reason why Lawrence Group wanted to become part of the redevelopment. The site is now on the National Register of Historic Places and Lawrence Group is leading the effort to create a 21st century mixed-use development that celebrates creative concepts in food, commerce, and entrepreneurship.
- Discuss and better understand the Brentwood Bound Project and learn how the City leveraged specific sustainability initiatives to enhance the overall project. Investigate the environmental benefits of flood mitigation in a high traffic urban community.
- Define NET ZERO Energy and discover "Go vs. No Go" project characteristics needed to make NET ZERO financially viable. Clarify the challenges that make private developers not pursue NET ZERO and learn simple energy reducing design solutions with definable payback for commercial buildings.
- Explore coordinating connections between an Owner's Core Values and the USGBC Four Pillars. Explain educating an Owner's Community during the coordination and collaboration process and understand a "top down" decision through an Owner's Community. Discuss coordinating the construction of a LEED project with adjoining major construction projects in the middle of a higher education campus.
- Review the principles of mass timber design and the potential for reduced carbon footprint. Articulate the financial societal, and environmental benefits of mass timber and WELL building Design while understanding the connection of a post-Pandemic design response and WELL Building standard (specifically the WELL Health Safety rating). Identify the ten concepts of the WELL Building standard v2, the strategies to achieve them, and the health impacts they address in your local community.
