Lunch 'n LEED
LEED EBOM Education Series - Energy & Atmosphere
Lessons from the Field:
Commerce Bank Center for Science Education
Session 3 of a 5 part series.
Attending the entire series is highly recommended.
This Lunch ‘n LEED series differs from the others, as it will be taught by live local instructors, as opposed to pre-recorded webinars. Presenters will detail their experience working to pursue LEED EB:O&M for the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Commerce Bank Center for Science Education (CBEC), which achieved LEED Silver in December 2012.
In 2013, the Chapter will be looking for another non-profit interested in greening their building with LEED EB: O&M. And we’ll be looking for more volunteers too! If you’re interested in this opportunity, you won’t want to miss this series of presentations!
The May 9 session will focus on the Sustainable Sites and Water Efficiency categories. For each credit category, presenters will review: A brief explanation of credit intent and requirements, reason for pursuing or not pursing a credit, data collection/monitoring, plans, policies, procedures, data submission/template, performance period, as well as review comments and lesson’s learned. Lunch will not be provided, rather we encourage attendees to bring their own brown bag lunch to enjoy during the presentation.
Speakers: Gwenn Ivester, Cassidy Turley &
Deb Frank, MBG
Pursuit of LEED certification for CBEC was a pilot for the Chapter’s LEED Community Project. Volunteers from USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter were recruited to assist with data gathering and analysis, development and implementation of policies and plans and documentation of building operations. This not only provided hands-on learning and direct experience with the LEED EB: O&M process, it also earned volunteers eligibility to qualify for a LEED specialty exam.
Volunteers met monthly from October 2011 to April 2012 in order to keep one another informed, managing several key parts of the project, including interior and exterior lighting audits, the occupancy survey and the custodial effectiveness audit. They also assisted with policy, procedure and plan review, creation. The application for certification was submitted in July 2012. After a few rounds of clarification, Silver certification was awarded and accepted in December 2012.
