The field of sustainable design offers a thousand-and-one approaches for saving bathwater. Babies, on the other hand, get much less consideration. While the focus on “bathwater” is understandable and logical, the theory and practice of sustainable design (and sustainable development) has much to gain by focusing more attention on the baby.
This seminar is intended to show why young children are fundamentally important in achieving global sustainable development, and to examine the importance of considering young children during the sustainable design process. This argument can be summarized as: “focusing attention and resources on young children is the most cost-effective way to improve the quality of life for a whole community over the longest period of time”. The course will unpack, explain and elaborate on this argument. On a more practical level, this course will offer a new and compelling argument to present to potential clients about the benefits of sustainable design.
